Why can the billing weight be higher than the weight on a scale?
A route can price space as well as physical mass. Check the finished parcel dimensions, the route’s volumetric divisor, its rule for choosing chargeable weight and its rounding increments. Reducing grams alone may not change the bill.
Name the three weights before comparing them
The Superbuy calculator FAQ explains volume weight using a 6,000 divisor for a general air-cargo example. This is not a promise that every route uses 6,000. Check the line details before using the formula.
| Term | Meaning to verify |
|---|---|
| Physical or actual weight | The completed parcel’s scale reading, including its packaging. |
| Volumetric weight | A calculated weight based on outside dimensions and the applicable divisor. |
| Chargeable or billed weight | The result after applying the selected route’s comparison and rounding rules. |

An arithmetic example, not a shipping quote
Assume a fictional packed box measures 40 × 30 × 25 cm and weighs 3 kg. Its volume is 30,000 cm³. For comparison only, dividing by 6,000 gives 5 kg; dividing by 5,000 gives 6 kg. The second divisor is an alternative assumption here, not a verified rate for a named line.
If a hypothetical line bills the larger of physical and volumetric weight, that same 3 kg box would be compared against 5 kg or 6 kg respectively, before any rounding. This example produces no price: a real bill still needs the selected line’s current rules.
| Illustrative input | Arithmetic result |
|---|---|
| 40 × 30 × 25 cm | 30,000 cm³ |
| 30,000 ÷ 6,000 | 5 kg |
| 30,000 ÷ 5,000 | 6 kg |
| Same divisor, height reduced to 20 cm | 24,000 ÷ 6,000 = 4 kg — assuming safe packing is possible |
Change the input that causes the higher result
If volume controls the result, ask which packaging can safely be changed and request new finished dimensions. If physical weight controls it, merely folding an empty box may not change the chargeable weight. Compare before and after measurements using the same rule.
An August 2026 Reddit buyer asks about physical and volumetric weights that differ substantially. The discussion demonstrates the question; it does not establish that the warehouse measured your parcel incorrectly or that removing packaging is always safe.
